Make Sure to Measure Twice!It’s given that the posts’ nominal size differs from their actual size. And even then, it’s difficult to process wood to be the exact size down to the last millimeter. For this reason, it’s important to measure all 4x4 posts. You don’t need to measure that entire post, just the edges surrounding the end grain. For the plastic fence post caps to fit, the edges around the post’s end grain should be approximately 3 5/8 inches by 3 5/8 inches. If you need to make adjustments for the plastic caps to fit, ensure that the posts’ edges won’t go beyond the caps’ 1/2 inch inner edge/lip. The caps’ slanting design is 1 inch wide, making the total depth of the caps 1 1/4 inches.
