Logan's Run, the 1976
Michael Anderson
futuristic science fiction (sci-fi) escape dystopian future thriller ("Welcome To The 23rd Century."; "The perfect world of total pleasure ...there's just one catch."; "Imagine this... You touch a switch, turn a dial...and the perfect lover steps into your arms."; "Imagine: clothing made of lightweight precious jewels and metals molded to your body instantly. Imagine: a whole new face, a whole new body ...a whole new you...in less than an hour. Imagine: a world in which each day is the best day of your life! There's just one catch. The only thing you can't have in this perfect world of tomorrow is... Your 30th birthday. And Logan is 29. This is his story... An adventure so amazing it could only happen in the world of the future. A world unimagined... Until now. To bring it to life MGM and producer Saul David have pushed beyond the limits of today's film technology to create the first motion picture of the 23rd century. Logan's Run. It begins where imagination ends."; "Based on the novel 'Logan's Run' by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson"; "MGM puts the 23rd century in the palm of your hand."; "It will be here sooner than you think."; "Free to all patrons attending the opening day of 'Logan's Run' The Life Symbol"; "Wear it in the palm of your left hand... it's your link to the lifeclock of tomorrow."; about a society that only allows people to live to the age of 30 and how runners, who run away from the imminent death just as Logan & Jessica are doing, try to get to "Sanctuary", the mythical place where all the "runners" go to escape their death) starring
Michael York
(in the title role as Logan),
Jenny Agutter
, Richard Jordan, Roscoe Lee Browne,
Farrah Fawcett
(billed as "
Farrah Fawcett
-Majors"), and
Peter Ustinov
In the original novel, the colors of the Life Clock change every seven years: yellow (birth-6), blue (7-13), red (14-20), red and black on Lastday, and black at 21. According to the audio commentary, the movie changed it to 30 because it wasn't realistic to have a cast with all of the characters under 21.
Contrary to advertising and the end credits, this movie was not filmed using the original 65mm incarnation of Todd-AO, which was officially confirmed by director Michael Anderson. The 35mm negative was optically enlarged to 70mm print copies for deluxe exhibition, a process better known as a "70mm blow-up". This movie was filmed in Todd-AO 35, using Arriflex and Mitchell cameras. The Todd-AO 35 anamorphic lens system was designed by Dr.
Richard Vetter
. He received a Technical Achievement Award at the 46th Annual Academy Awards, for this improved anamorphic focusing system. It had the added advantage of maintaining a constant squeeze ratio of 2:1 of the image at all focus distances, without distortion. This particular lens system was best known for its incredible sharpness, warmth, and for having the ability to flare rather easily. An anamorphic system that resulted in the lowest amount of distortion, when originally released.
he opening prologue states: "Sometime in the 23rd century...the survivors of war, overpopulation and pollution are living in a great domed city, sealed away from the forgotten world outside. Here, in an ecologically balanced world, mankind lives only for pleasure, freed by the servo-mechanisms which provide everything. There's just one catch: life must end at thirty unless reborn in the fiery ritual of the carrousel."
The waterfalls and steps Logan jumps into to get back into the dome are the "active pool" of the Water Gardens, in Fort Worth, Texas. The main pool used to be nine feet deep, but it closed in 2004 after four people drowned near the spot where Logan and Jessica dove in. When it reopened in 2007, the depth had been reduced to two feet.
