    Description

A lot of people have one pencil (or half of one, since it's already been sharpened many times by the time they get it) that a grandparent handed down which may have made it to 50+ years old.
You are bidding on an incredibly rare and special complete box set of a dozen (12) untouched and unsharpened 1920s (pre-Lumograph, which they started making in 1930) MARS Staedtler 2957 Black Copying Pencils from Bavaria, in the original high quality tin box (which as you can see is in great condition as well considering its age)...AND the original inserts and marketing materials with lists of all the products they offered at the time.
Starting with the tin itself: Finding this exact design tin in this condition is tough, but not impossible online...although one pre-dating the 1930s moreso. Especially when you consider it has the original sales sticker indicating what model of pencils it contains (2957 Black). Please take a look at the pictures, but the tin has 100 years of age on it, so the gold paint has a bit of wear in certain places...although there doesn't seem to be any corrosion or anything being eaten away like a lot of these tins seem to have going on. The catch on the front snaps closed and opens easily when you push in on the lip, so the functionality of this tin is great and you should have no problems opening/closing/locking it as the designers intended when it was made. When you open the lid, you'll see a painted half moon (the MARS Half Moon Trademark), with "MARS" on top and "J.S. STAEDTLER" in the design beneath it. This logo looks like they printed it yesterday and is in exceptional mint condition.
The paperwork: Now we're into rare territory, as finding the original marketing materials and inserts for pencils of any variety from the 1920s, especially in such great condition, is extremely uncommon. Talk about trying to sell you on how great their stuff is...The first thing you see says, "1 Dozen finest and best 'MARS' Drawing Pencils." They go on to state that they have created "the perfect writing utensil" and point out that "only Staedtler can make MARS pencils." All products they made at the time are listed, as well as a couple other self-promoting statements that show how much they revere their own pencils (see pictures for full print/text, as there is a lot of it). Last note on the paperwork is that it's all in English, which seems to be far more difficult to find.
The piece de resistance, the pencils themselves: These have only one mention I can find online...on a pencil blog, several years ago. The pictures are gone and there's not a lot of info there, but basically these are beyond scarce and finding just one of these unsharpened 1920s Mars Staedtler 2957 Black pencils would be a grail find for many pencil collectors. Here you can obtain a dozen completely unsharpened specimens which have never been touched by anyone beyond me moving them to count them and make sure they were all there...and to spin the pencils for a good picture of their labels.
This will be my final reduction on the price and if they don't sell here, they are going to stay in my collection - these are exceptionally cool and a definite conversation piece.
The price is based on a value of for each brand new, unsharpened pencil in the box (12 of them) and for the tin.
Please take a look at all the pictures and send me a message if you've got any questions or concerns or need more pictures or whatever the case may be. I am a collector myself and was extremely excited when I found these, but have a habit of holding on to too many items...so I'm reluctantly letting them go before my wife kills me.
Thanks for bidding! Returns will not be accepted and these are sold as-is - you will receive the exact pencils, box, and paperwork that you see in the pictures. Shipping will be via USPS first class mail.
