Dan Oliver worked through Shades of the West in Scottsdale, AZ, creating beautiful pieces for 40 years. His father Lloyd Oliver, one of 29 original code talkers during WWII, also was a silversmith and worked for Shades of the West for 40 years. He was Dan's early teacher in silversmithing. Dan loved working with silver and it shows in his one-of-a- kind creations,  like this massive and beautiful concho belt. Each concho, including the buckle, is heavily stamped and the center is punched out. The buckle is hand-tied to the belt, and the back carried the artist's signature, and Sterling, along with the diamond stamp indicating Shades of the West. The workmanship is remarkable, as is the case with his other pieces, many of which are of deceptively simple design. He truly lets the silver, his art and his beautiful craftsmanship speak for themselves. Having looked at a number of his pieces as well as this fine belt, I am struck by the integrity of the pieces, how they exude strength and honesty. Dan Oliver's work is highly sought after, and I think in part because the artist has such a fine reputation, well-earned. A Dan Oliver piece would be a wonderful addition to any collection.
