1—UNISSUED VIETNAM ERA MLCE NYLON FIELD PACK SUSPENDERS (1968)YOU ARE PURCHASING:
AN UNISSUED MLCE (MODIFIED LOAD CARRYING EQUIPMENT) NYLON “H” PATTERN SUSPENDERS DATED 1968.
I AM PULLING THESE FROM THEIR ORIGINAL UNOPENED GOVERNMENT CONTRACT CARTON SO THEY ARE STILL PACKED IN THEIR ORIGINAL GOVERNMENT STRING TIE WRAP.
THESE SUSPENDERS WERE ESSENTIALLY A NYLON VERSION OF THEIR PREDECESSOR—THE CANVAS M1956 SUSPENDERS.
THEY WERE DESIGNED TO LESSEN THE WEIGHT THAT THE SOLDIER HAD TO CARRY.
THE EXISTING M1956 SUSPENDERS READILY ABSORBED WATER (UP TO 40% OF ITS DRY WEIGHT) AND DID NOT DRY EASILY IN VIETNAM’S HUMID CONDITIONS.
IN ANOTHER WEIGHT REDUCING MOVE, THE STEEL AND BRASS HARDWARE THAT WERE PART OF THE M1956 SUSPENDER WERE REPLACED WITH LIGHTER ANODIZED ALLOY FITTINGS.
THESE MLCE SUSPENDERS DIFFERED FROM THE M1956 IN THE DESIGN OF THE ATTACHMENT SNAP HOOKS.
INSTEAD OF RELYING ON A SPRING TO CLOSE THE HOOK, IT HAD AN INTEGRAL “GATE” THAT CLOSED OVER THE HOOK END TO PREVENT IT FROM DISENGAGING.
THUS THE HOOKS DID NOT SPRING INTO PLACE, AS ON THE M1956, BUT HAD TO BE MANUALLY CLOSED—WHICH PROVIDED A MORE SECURE, RELIABLE CLOSURE.
THE ONLY OTHER SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE 2 TYPES OF SUSPENDERS WAS THAT THE MLCE HAD AN ADDITIONAL PAIR OF HOOKS LOCATED AT THE SHOULDER SECTION FOR THE ATTACHMENT OF THE SLEEPING BAG CARRIER AND FIELD PACK.
THE M1967 SYSTEM WAS DESIGNED FOR USAGE IN VIETNAM AND WAS NOT INTENDED, NOR DID IT SEE, ARMY-WIDE ISSUE.
THESE SUSPENDERS REMAINED IN THE SYSTEM UNTIL 1974 WHEN ALICE (ALL PURPOSE LIGHTWEIGHT INDIVIDUAL CARRYING GEAR) WAS ADOPTED.
