Description
You are bidding on a spectacular matched pair of belt conchos by renowned Navajo silversmith Charlie John (see last photo for hallmark). Charlie is a well known Native American artisan from Arizona who has been making Navajo jewelry for 50 years. They are 2 3/16" (55.56mm) in diameter overall, with a 1 11/16" (42.86mm) inlaid turquoise chip circle 1/8" (3.18mm) wide, followed a roughly 1/2" (12.7mm) x 3/8" (9.53mm) central turquoise stone. Scalloped edge with engraving 1/8' (3.18mm) from the rim. Weight of one is 33.2 grams and the other is 32.7 grams. Designed for a 1 1/2" (38.1mm) belt.
Conchos are sterling silver, but the belt loops on the back are apparently copper. The turquoise itself is definitely Arizona, and I personally feel it's either Morenci, Bisbee or Kingman from the color and mineral content, and Charlie is known to have worked with stones from all.
Unlike most of the jewelry I'll be listing, I don't know much about the history of this set. My family lived in Northern New Mexico over a period of several generations stretching from 1909 to the late 1970s, and we acquired large amounts of Navajo jewelry and sand paintings before they were famous or fashionable. These two, however, I don't recognize from my youth. It is possible they were my Uncle's or Grandfather's and I just never saw them or they could have been purchased later or even taken on a debt. I simply can't say.
What I can say is that they are lovely. These have actually been worn, and there is obviously some light scratching on the face (see photos), but are in spectacular condition. There is an interesting effect taking place on these pieces which you can see clearly in the photos. The front of both are shiny from constant brushing against moving clothes, but the back has that lovely patina sterling takes on with time.
I have set a reserve on these which I rarely do, because I think they are truly unique and they aren't going to a silver scrapper. This is your opportunity to own a magnificent one of a kind piece of Navajo art from Charlie John, and they are the sort of functional artwork you'll be pleased to pass on to your children.
If you need more information or photos I will be more than happy to assist. Please ask if you have any question at all. I do not accept returns, but if you have an issue please let me know. I have an excellent seller rating here for a reason.
